Counting down the days till foaling season!
In the meantime we do our daily belly checks. Fergus, Larkin and I will take the snowmobile up to check on the girls. They like to tie their toboggan behind the sled and rip up there. ‘Mom go faster’ they squeal through snowy smiles. I give a little gas with my thumb going not much faster and they laugh and laugh thinking it’s worlds faster.
When we get up to the mares i dump their mineral to them and they love to get in there with their hands and stir the loose granules around. The mares hear us and start to make their way over. They love it too. Gnom gnom gnom.
We look at everyone and admire their growing bellies. Excited for each one of the babies we get to meet this spring. The boys already have a list of names for them, whichever is their favourite movie or thing at the time. Names like ‘Bluey, spidey, hammerhead shark, or rubble and crew,’ depending on which kid you ask.
We have two mares who were AI’d to Xhiao earlier in the year so they will be the first to arrive early April. Foxy and Rosie, gracious ladies who love the cuddles and come up to us with the excitement of proud expectant moms. We sometimes get lucky and watch their bellies dance around. Foxy even let Fergus feel some kicks the other day. If that foal is anything like her sister she’s going to be another dancing ballerina. 🤤
And so we wait with them. In those moments of winter feeding, enjoying the smells and quiet calm of the herd. And we wait with them until their time to labor arrives. Rolling out our bedrolls for the nights to sleep in the barn next to their stalls excited for the newest arrivals in 2025.
